How To Create Your Eco-Friendly Backyard

An eco-friendly backyard may have vibrant greens of native grasses bending to gentle breezes, and splashes of flowering color alongside a quiet place to relax. Our outdoor spaces are just as important as the space created inside the home. Nature needs patches of land, however small, where she can renew herself with native plants and natural organic care. Humans also need outdoor spaces in which we can relax and renew ourselves. Creating or expanding an environmentally focused landscape is an ideal way to help nature out, while providing a special backyard sanctuary that can be enjoyed for years to come.

To bring an environmental focus to your landscape, start from the ground up, first addressing what goes into the soil, surrounding plants, and into the air. One of the most important things you can do to green the outside of your home is make the switch to using natural and organic fertilizers and pesticides. This is especially important if you are growing plants for food or have children or pets that spend time in your yard.

A healthy lawn will benefit from fertilizing or mulching once or twice a year, in the spring and again in the fall. Organic fertilizers build the health of your plants naturally, and could make them more resistant to pests.

When plants are healthy and growing in good soil with strong sunlight, there is less need for pesticides. When you must use a pesticide, choosing a homemade or organic one will give you a safer place to walk through the grass, and peace of mind knowing that the run-off from rains will not contain the dangerous chemicals from your lawn and plants.

Caring for your lawn in an environmentally friendly way has a lot to do with what you don't do to your grass. When we choose to water and mow lawns in conjunction with nature, it is less work for us humans and helps our yard develop it's own natural beauty. Watering your lawn infrequently and deeply when it is beginning to show signs of drought will help the grass develop strong roots and better compete with the weeds, which tend to have more shallow roots. Wait until the grass is beginning to curl or turn yellow, and then provide a good half-inch of water. Wait an hour for the water to soak in, and then repeat.

Mow the lawn with the blades on the highest setting; then taller grass can shade out competing weeds and grow healthier. Leave the lawn clippings spread evenly over the grass to add nutrients and further shade out weeds the natural way.

Once you have turned your lawn into an eco-friendly haven, next turn to other aspects of the landscape, including plants, animal habitat and water features. Filling your outdoor space with native plants not only provides a more natural feel to the space, but also makes it easier on the gardener. Native plants are typically more drought tolerant and will grow better in your area, requiring less maintenance. Take into account the amount of sunlight and ease of watering when you choose areas for planting.

Just as plants provide habitat for backyard critters, areas of brush, small woodpiles or thick bushes also make a great home for the animals that are attracted to our eco-yards. Adding water features such as a fountain, small pond or birdbath will attract and keep a wider array of wildlife. Birdhouses and bird feeders are an addition that creates a more inclusive environment for a variety of birds and other animals.

Once your outdoor space has been transformed into an eco-friendly haven for plants and animals, complete the process by further making the space pleasing and inviting to people. Green or environmental companies offer an array of outdoor living products. You may find patio furniture made from sustainably harvested teak or recycled materials, or a hammock constructed of recycled items. Look for a wind chime made from more environmentally friendly aluminum that is built to last, or add solar lighting to complete the landscape.

Co-op America maintains the Green Pages, a nationwide list of extensively screened environmental and socially responsible stores, which makes the task of searching for green companies much easier. Whatever additions you make to complete your eco-friendly backyard, you will be helping the environment through these committed companies, all while doing your part to green your own little piece of earth. -Rachel Betzen

Eco Property Houses – Houses Go Green!

Eco property development, also known as green property is new real estate trend. This has come into vogue due to climatic changes. Eco friendly properties utilize ‘green’ construction methods with minimal environmental impact. Many people are looking forward to eco property as it is safe. People, who are interested in buying eco property, can approach eco property dealers. It gives them a chance to advertise eco-property either for sale purpose or buying needs.

Eco friendly property for-sale -friendly properties has been in existence from quite some time. The trend is fast catching up in India of late. Improvements in technology and reduction in costs owning has made it very easy for everyone to afford an eco-friendly property. The eco-friendly homes have numerous benefits. They can help save energy by using solar power, solar hot water heaters, wind power and wind turbines.

Owing an eco property helps reduce the strain on energy reserves, reduce pollution to a large extent, besides reducing the cost of housing. It is a known fact that energy resources are becoming scarce day by day. Whether a house has a solar hot water heater or a ground source heat pump, it can affect a properties value and selling potential. Eco friendly homes stand to yield greater results in the long run.

You can easily get eco-friendly building materials, lime plaster, straw bale, cob, hemp, eco-friendly wood products like, FSC timber, bamboo etc. As the products being used are natural, the house will be completely free of any kind of harmful gases. Moreover, it will help save a substantial amount of money too. The demand fro eco property has stemmed out of the need to meet high standards of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The prime focus is on resources such as energy, water and materials.

Going in for eco property can help reduce the energy bills and offer a healthier living environment. It also plays a significant role in reducing the effect of environmental hazards and ease its effects on human health and environment too. Non usage of toxic materials and products will also improve indoor air quality, and reduce the rate of asthma, allergy and sick building syndrome. These materials are known to be emission-free. Bangalore has become the prime destination for many. The city attracts a huge number of people due to the job opportunities. Building in Bangalore costs a significant amount of money. However, approaching property dealers can help reduce the expenses related to property. -Sadhana Dhanyal

Eco Friendly Property Construction

“Go Green” – “ECO friendly” - “save the planet” – “Global Warming”. All words we are very familiar with unless you have lived on the moon for the past 5 years or so. Now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and offering green products and services. But how green are they and is it just a token gesture to be popular? We have been researching the possibilities of building eco friendly and economical green villas in Spain after I inadvertently made the mistake of asking my wife how she would like her new house built. “Eco friendly” she replied.

Those two words began a journey of thousands of miles across Europe and countless hours researching the web to find out how “eco friendly” I could build her dream home. Initially I found that an eco friendly home was just a cave house…I didn’t fancy living in or building a cave house, or they had thicker lagging on pipes or they offered solar water heaters…BIG DEAL, I expected that as standard, in fact it is law in Spain now to have alternative water heating supply, one company even classed a home as eco friendly because the heating had a thermostat.

Two years later and after securing the sole rights to build with a German quality ICF system we are beginning our first two new eco friendly villas in Spain for clients and have several scheduled to begin next year. The interest has been amazing; unfortunately this means my wife’s dream home has been put on hold for a while but our business and our attitude to all things green is being transformed. We are offering geothermal heating systems, solar power, grey water systems, water saving systems inside and outside the home, wind turbines, appliance advice, lighting systems I never knew existed and even water less toilets (the jury is still out on that one with me) all this to make our eco friendly villas in Spain as economically friendly as we can. The fantastic thing about the Eco friendly build systems is the speed and insulating values they offer. A traditional styled villa of a 100m2 villa can be erected within 10 days! Saving weeks of labour charges thus bringing the cost of these new eco friendly properties on par or even cheaper than traditional block and beam villas. The insulation values are amazing and they even have fantastic sound insulation (great if you have noisy teenagers like me).

When we first introduced this system to an architect he looked blankly at the proposal and smiled that smile you see in Spain when you know they think you are mad and after experiencing this manic suppressed grin over a lengthy period of time with a lot of old – maybe not old but my age – ok old Architects! We finally came across a young enthusiastic architect who believed and embraced the system as we did. We drew up a set of plans and submitted them to the local town hall and put the project forward to the bank for a valuation. The town hall was thrilled with the idea and the bank valued the project over 40% higher than we charged the client! Now this could have a lot to do with the fact that we are inexpensive builders but the manager did tell us they are valuing homes with eco friendly factors higher than traditional homes.

We are not jumping on the bandwagon … we’re driving it! -K.Towers

Why You Should Travel Green

With the number of tourists traveling the world increases every year, the environmental impact of tourism only grows worse every year.

Travelers tend to produce a lot of trash- few tourists recycle while traveling, hotels are very inefficient, and airplanes spew carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Tourism can be pretty environmentally unfriendly.

With climate change, deforestation, and species extinction the defining issues of the day, it’s more important than ever before that we make our travels more environmentally friendly. Over the past few years, a new wave has matured within in the travel industry called “eco-tourism” to help make that possible.

Eco-tourism deals with reducing travels impact- both for the environment and for local people. Eco-tourism promotes environmental and social awareness and, typically, eco-tours travel to countries where the flora and fauna are abundant. Think of places like Costa Rica, Tanzania, the Amazon, and New Zealand.

While many eco-tours are simply greener versions of regular tours, others have specific angles:
• Volunteering: Many tours are based on participants volunteering in local community initiatives and clean up projects.
• Local Cultures: Many tours focus on educating groups about the local culture. This includes cooking classes, home stays, and language classes. The idea is to spread cultural respect and understanding while decreasing everyone’s environmental impact.
• Environmental education: These tours focus on highlight environmental issues in a local area and what can be done to improve the situation.

Eco-tourism promotes environmental awareness among its participants and reduces the environmental impact of tourism. Organizations use local products, local guides, and visit organizations that use sustainable and low impact methods.

Moreover, it promotes local conservation and trains locals on how protecting the environment is good for the planet but also for their wallet. Many companies run conservation programs and train locals on how to look after the environment. After all, no flora and fauna, no travel business.

Beyond the environmental impact is the social impact. By creating self sustaining industries and training locals, eco-tours help ensure that improvised communities develop financial independence giving them less incentive to cut down the environment that feeds them.

Here are a few tips that can help you reduce your environmental impact while traveling with these eco-tours:

Carry a water bottle.
Why it’s Green: No waste created from empty bottles.
Why it Helps You: You save money because you won’t have to buy water. Another option is (if you can’t drink the local water) to buy extra large jugs of water, leave them at the hostel; filling your bottle with only what you will need that day.

Walk, walk, walk.
Why it’s Green: No carbon emissions when walking.
Why it Helps You: You’ll stay in shape and you’ll save money.

When you can’t walk, take public transportation.
Why it’s Green: Fewer carbon emissions than a rental car or a taxi.
Why it Helps You: You get to really experience the local way of life and maybe meet an interesting local.

Eat less food and eat locally.
Why it’s Green: The “carbon footprint” of food is extraordinary! Eating less means there’s less waste and eating locally means a smaller footprint.
Why It Helps You: You’ll be healthier and save money and also you’ll gain a greater appreciation for the local culture.

The environment is the defining issue of our century. These problems affect us all and, if we don’t start reducing our impact on the earth, many of these beautiful places in the world might soon vanish.

Travel is a great experience and helps promote cultural understanding but typical travel has a heavy toll on the environment. For those with a green spirit, this can be a problem. We don’t have to pick between travel and the environment and, with eco-tourism, we can have our cake and eat it too. -Matthew Kepnes

Whenever You Travel, Go for a Green Hotel

One can help to reduce the negative impact that hotels have on environment by staying at a green hotel.

Green hotels use energy and resources efficiently thereby implementing recycling of products. Using nonrenewable resources efficiently and utilizing renewable resources is what Green hotels concentrate on.

The staggering figure of guests in the hotels, the meals prepared for them, water consumption, and energy required for lighting, cooling and heating all indicate that there is an enormous need to implement green hotel practices.

While you are at a green hotel, you are sure to receive quality service. Apart from the service quality, you will also be helping the environment.

Adopting green hotel practices helps hotels to realize cost savings which can be used for enhancing services provided to the guests.

Finding a Green Hotel

Finding a green hotel that suits your style, needs and pocket is not easy. But, with little effort one can easily find a hotel that makes you feel at home or in the lap of nature.

Choosing a Green Hotel

The key component of green travel is to book an eco-lodge. Many hotels are now making their ambience and implementing practices which make hotels- green homes away from homes for the guests.

Being a Green Hotel guest

When staying in a hotel, the following steps help you to become a green hotel guest:

  • Ask the hotel staff not to change the sheets and towels on a daily basis.
  • Switch off the lights and electrical appliances if any like television, air conditioner and close the drapes when leaving the room.
  • Participate in the recycling efforts which the hotel promotes.
  • Pass the newspaper provided by the hotel to someone else after you have read and encourage the hotel management to implement recycling.
  • Take short showers
  • While brushing teeth, don’t let the water run
  • Turn off the exercise machines when done
  • Place the brochures and other tourist information back in the racks after reading rather than throwing
  • If disposable utensils are used in the hotel, bring your own disposable cups etc.
  • When having food, if you don’t drink water along, ask the staff not to pour in your glass
  • Thank the staff and management- managers and employees for embracing green hotel practices and appreciate their effort
Be a nice guest to encourage the hotel become ‘Green’

What if you stay in a hotel that is not green i.e. not following green practices?Being a guest a positive effort in this case would be to encourage the hotel to become Green.

Following the steps given below will encourage the staff at the hotel:

  • Asking the hotel managers and staff to follow green practices and tell them the importance for guests
  • If you know some tips that will help hotels to be environmentally friendly, discuss them with managers
  • Try to contact hotel’s president or CEO or send him a letter that will say the importance of following green hotel practices and how will it make a difference.
Thus, Implementing Green Hotel Practices is a challenge that hotels should face and help in conserving our resources and environment.

So, the next time you travel, make a difference for the environment by Going Green. -M. Scott Parisi

Eco Carpet Cleaning – Go Green and Reap the Rewards

In recent years many Carpet Cleaning businesses have been pursuing green methods of cleaning to avoid using dangerous and polluting chemicals in the industry in favour of more natural solutions. Years ago, it was said that carpet cleaning chemicals got into the air of a room when applied during cleaning, and could also be ingested by kids who played on the floor soon afterwards. Besides such health hazards, carpet cleaning chemicals could pollute local groundwater if disposed of improperly (such as directly down your drain). Also, waste water from carpet cleaning required treatment and/or filtration in order to neutralize contaminants.

The local carpet cleaning businesses that have greened up their processes are now reaping the rewards as environmentally aware consumers take advantage of a more responsible approach to cleaning their carpets and upholstery.

The health benefits come without additional cost and indeed considerable savings can be made from using such methods. Nowadays more and more people are well aware of the long-term health effects of toxic chemicals in cleaning products and appreciate the benefits of using companies that use products that are safe, more effective and better for the environment. An Eco Friendly Carpet Cleaning service involves using products which are free of detergents, free of toxic chemicals and free of harmful solvents. These products are completely safe to children and pets, are water based and do not contain solvents, bleaches, enzymes or phosphates. These new natural products promote good health, sustain the environment and at the same time remain highly effective and produce superb results.

What motivates the local business to be green? Is there a genuine concern for the planet and its occupants or is it just good for business? Probably a bit of both…. -Bob Robertson

Think Green - Drink Green

There's apple wine, ice wine, corked wine. And yes there is green wine. Not green in color, but green in "good for the environment" green.

I know I know, green is everywhere. But it needs to be everywhere. Green is all about changing your lifestyle to produce less waste and use less resources that damage our environment. So if you are going to enjoy wine, why not enjoy it with Green in mind? I'm not saying drink less, just be green while drinking.

Here's how; drink wine from wineries that are green, use glassware and other wine products that are eco-friendly, and of course recycle those wine bottles.

Because wine is an agricultural product people think wineries are environmentally friendly. What's better for the environment than rows and rows of vines? Surprise. Vineyards can have a negative impact on the surrounding eco-system, from deforestation issues with planting the vines, to run-off water with pesticides, and of course soil erosion. Fortunately, more and more winemakers are taking steps toward sustainable farming and organic practices. Read more about this at www.matchmywine.com. But finding a winery that is Green is not an easy task.

The number of California wineries that have started sustainable practices has increased 24% since 2004 according to a wine industry progress report.

There are a number of Napa Wineries who are "Napa Green" certified. But this only means that they are friendly to fish. Enrollment in the Napa Green program shows a winery's serious commitment to enhancing the watershed and restoring habitats with sustainable agriculture practices. Wineries and landowners receive Napa Green certification by participating in the Fish Friendly Farming program - creating a customized farm plan that addresses all aspects of the vineyard and entire property and outlines practices to achieve soil conservation, water conservation, stable drainage, riparian corridor enhancement, fisheries enhancement and long-term improvement and sustainability.

There is also an organization called the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) which promotes the benefits of sustainable winegrowing practices, enlists industry commitment and assists in implementation of the Sustainable Winegrowing Program. Unfortunately I couldn't find any certification program.

Beringer Vineyards is one of Napa Valley's most historic wineries and is Napa Green certified. They do everything from developing paths for live animals, creating runoff channels so irrigation water runs away from creeks and water sources, using coverstock in-between vines, mulching many of the clippings and skins back into fertilizer, and using lady bugs for insect control and hawks for bird control.

Use products that are eco-friendly like wine glasses and consider bottles with screw tops. Recycle your wine bottles either in your recycling bin or give them to a local, home winemaker. If you find a good resource for old wine bottles let me know. Don't forget to bring your own boxes with you on your wine tours. And bring those reusable bags in with you to the wine shop - all that brown paper bags just gets tossed out in the trash.

So use a recycled wine glass and enjoy some Clos Du Green. It's the right thing to do. Green IS the new Black. -Mike Birdsall

A Great Green Wedding

Dressed in white can have a green twist. There are a number of ways to make your perfect day as environmentally friendly as possible. Here are some important ideas to consider for a great green wedding:

Invitations - everyone knows that the right paper stock is one of the most important decisions you can make when it comes to pre wedding day planning. But instead of going for a heavy card stock with environmentally damaging gloss or matte, consider if you need to have paper invitations at all!

Many wedding websites have sprung up to allow couples to plan their day and give guests all the information they need in paper saving electronic format. Couples can upload photos, tell their special story and direct guests to their registry on line. Many also have an RSVP feature so you can manage your list with a few clicks of the mouse. You and your mother can argue over background colours and menu patterns to your hearts 'content!

Dress - The right dress makes the memories. That doesn't mean you need to spend a small fortune (not to mention create a heavy environmental cost) with a tailor made piece that will just sit in your wardrobe for years to come. Consider vintage pieces or family pieces, there is nothing more sentimental to your mother, than walking down the aisle in same dress she wore back in the day. (You can tailor and amend it to suit your own taste and fashion of course!) Meanwhile, some companies create beautiful custom made pieces from sustainable fabrics , such as hemp, bamboo or organic cotton. Some even "upcycle" older gowns.

Gifts - Do you really want to face the possibility of ending up with two chip dippers or a variety of toasters that you'll have some trouble returning? You can use your special day to promote some well deserving charities and eco causes. Ask your guests to make a donation to your favourite in lieu of presents, then you can be sure you're getting the exact model of kettle you want!

Flowers - Consider the season when picking your flower arrangements. Out of season arrangements are often shipped from overseas adding to miles and emissions. There are also a number of issues regarding the ethics of the cut flower industry, with many sources citing cheap labour and unfair work conditions. Australia is abundant with beautiful species of wattles, banksias and colourful kangaroo paws for a truly unique look. Better yet, go organic!

Food - Organic caterers are all the rage. They provide some of the best food that you know is pesticide free and delightfully delicious. Look for a baker that uses organic eggs and flour and other sustainable ingredients.

Venue and transport - Pick a venue that's easy to get to and encourage your guests to carpool, or better yet, provide some shuttle bus transport yourself. Having the reception in the same place as the ceremony also cuts down on travel and emissions.

Rings - Eco is a girl's best friend. Lots of great companies "up cycle" jewellery from older pieces. Take in an old family heirloom and have it recrafted to create your own one of a kind piece.

Eco-friendly sex - How to get more!

  1. Have sex and become green Save water by having a shower together and if you have to race to the bedroom don't keep the shower running. In winter, have sex before sleeping so that the bedroom will become cozy, and the thermostat can be put at lower temperature. A motorbike ride for both is a kind eco-friendly, energy-saving method to enhance blood circulation and can be very stimulating, mostly for ladies. You can set the mood and save energy with the candle-lit dinner.
  2. Eco Green Lubrication Whether you need lube or not, a little more ambiguousness can improve your enjoyment. As with other personal care articles, opt for organic, eco-friendly products and stay away from} synthetic colors, flavor and scents and petroleum products. Natural lubes are also available.
  3. Eco Friendly Condoms A latex condom is the best choice for safe sex free of pregnancy. Vegans can have Glyde condoms, while other normal latex products are liable to have milk enzyme added to it. It is doubtful whether latex condoms have biodegradability and if they would it be changed by the lubes and further additives. Lambskin condoms are eco-friendly but they can prevent pregnancy, not STDs. Polyurethane condoms being basically plastic, are not eco-friendly. Worn condoms should invariably go the garbage deposit. {Flushing {down of condoms in the toilet won't do better as they will clog the pipelines, treatment plants and result in contamination of the rivers. So the standard of 'Condense - Recycle - Reprocess' is not valid in the case of condoms.
  4. Eco Friendly Green sex toys The Durex Global Sex Survey declares that vibrators are utilized by 43% of the individuals of the US. Many sex toys contain phthalates, a family of chemical compounds that are utilized for smoothening solid plastics like PVC and to provide a jelly-like feeling. The EU has imposed a ban on the usage of phthalates in kids' toys from 2004. The toxic environment and health dangers of phthalates, mainly in sex toys that are made to use in hot and moist parts of the body, comprise a matter of great concern. When the disclaimer found on sex toy packages declares that the device is for 'originality motive only' it has to be taken as a indirect cautioning. Be secure with toys made of metal, glass, silicone, elastomers or motorized sex toy, go for a rechargeable toy or use your rechargeable batteries.
  5. Eco Friendly Bamboo bed sheets If you have in no way utilized these eco-friendly bed sheets before, you are losing out. Bamboo material has a smooth texture and soaks up moisture; it is naturally opposed to micro-organisms and is processed from a fast renewable supply, and feels sexy.
  6. Eco-friendly underwear Extremely sexy lingerie and underwear made from natural cotton, cane, hemp silk and other renewable filaments are now available. When buying, look for quality and not novelty. Purchasing night apparel that will be utilized only a few times is not a great deal. Why not pay out a little more cash and buy an outfit that is elegant, long-lasting and sexy?
  7. Be a vegan If you are non vegetarian now and it may happen that a romantic trip is on the way, try out a vegetarian or vegan diet. Possiblities are that you will be considered a good friend of the Earth. The creation of meat is highly energy dependent and is liable for 70% of water contamination, in the United States. Reduction of your meat ingestion is a very eco-friendly approach. Moreover lots of sports people approve a vegan diet for extended duration.
  8. Eco Friendly Organic sex stimulants It is believed that herbs like ginseng, damiana leaves, kava roots, kelp, horny goat weed, tribulus, rhodiola rosea and ginko biloba can assist stimulate passion - more so if they are available with natural certification. Moreover some foods and drinks are considered exciting, the trusted ones being natural wine and champagne. -Douglas Rock

Making Green Fun for Your Kids

Childhood is a great time to learn about being environmentally friendly. It's hard in many ways, as your kids see their friends live without thinking about how their actions matter, the toys they play with, the things they have.

The first step is to keep things age appropriate. You can teach children very young about some things. My 2-1/2 year old, for example, already knows the difference between the trash and recycle bins. He asks where to put everything.

My 5 year old is getting into reusing things. An amazing range of things are great for art projects. Old magazines, cardboard boxes, egg cartons and many other items have been saved for later projects. It saves a lot of shopping for ways to help my daughter be creative.

As they reach school age you can teach them by not sending lunches in disposable baggies or containers. At my daughter's preschool, she was pretty much the only kid to bring her drink in a cup from home and snack in reusable containers. While these are still plastic, we'll be using them for years rather than just once.

Some parts of green living are pretty easy on the kids. Throwing things in the recycle bin rather than the trash is pretty easy. Getting kids to reuse things, especially as they get older and more self conscious can be harder. The social pressures really add to the challenge.

The Shopping Challenge

Sometimes you can point out the advantages that may not be so obvious at first. If you have a good resale or thrift shop in your area, sometimes you can get fairly trendy clothes for much less than you would have paid for new. There's nothing wrong with indulging your child's desire to look good if you can show them the best ways to do so.

Handmedowns can also be an issue, but if you handle it well the clothes are more likely to be acceptable to the recipient. Go through and agree on which ones are actually wanted. The excess can be donated.

Reduce is perhaps one of the most difficult sections to handle. This is especially true when birthdays and holidays come around and you have little control over what other people give to them. We regularly go through our children's things and talk about what is ready to be sold or donated. I also very rarely buy more toys for my kids. Quite frankly, between birthdays and Christmas they end up with more than they can play with anyhow.

But as they get older the issue often drifts toward the latest fashions and/or gadgets. I've already discussed how we cope with fashion, although since my oldest is 5 I have yet to deal with a truly fashion conscious child. She only thinks she has a fashion sense. Mostly involving dresses.

Gadgets such as cell phones, MP3 players and so forth are another matter. I dislike this trend of getting children a cell phone so very young, but at the same time I really do understand and sympathize. It can be pure torture wondering what is happening at your child' school some days. I watched some mothers in my area go through that recently when their children's high school had a shooting threat.

As I see it, it's one thing to get a cell phone or other gadget, another to keep updating it with the latest technology. I decided that I didn't need a cell phone that takes pictures, for example. Mine is only about 2-1/2 years old, but I can't count how many people I know who have replaced their cell phones only because they wanted the latest addition to it. Don't give in on this and explain why.

Teaching your kids to live green will not always be easy. They will resist at least some of the time. But through the years you can give them an appreciation for the world they live in and what they can do for it. -Stephanie Foster

The Modern Lawn Contributes to Climate Change

Americans love to have a healthy and beautiful yard. They have adopted and accepted a concept of beauty known as the "lawn." Many people believe that an expanse of short-trimmed grass-covered land is the most desirable look to have in one`s yard. This may include an occasional shrub or tree to add uniqueness and "diversity." Home-owners can help combat climate change by considering more diverse options for their own yards.

Yards can support green living and biological diversity, or yards can support climate change

In this time of global climate change, humans must consider the effects of all choices on the Earth. One`s yard offers an important opportunity to make a difference as an individual. So let`s ask the question: "Does my yard promote biological diversity as well as healthy water and soil and air?" Upon first consideration it may seem like everything is just fine. The reality is, however, that most people may not know the true, long-lasting effects of choices that have long been accepted as safe or healthy.

Climate change is real and is getting worse

Climate change has led to such phenomena as:
* a hotter and drier planet
* loss of forests, trees, plants, animals, and ground covers
* depletion of soil health and minerals from using chemicals, over-farming, and mowing
* loss of usable fresh water from both pollution and over-consumption
* drying out of the soil layers as water tables lower and rain patterns change
* loss of biological diversity including birds, bees, worms, insects, and much more
* mass extinction of many of Earth`s species - forever
* storm patterns and fires increasing in number and intensity

Some prevalent causes of climate change include:
* unsustainable production processes
* unsustainable and inhumane agricultural practices
* unconscious and wasteful consumption habits
* unchecked use of and dependence on fossil fuels
* unquestioned use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides
* unquestioned use of chemical cleansers and other chemicals
* rapid and rampant deforestation (including in individual`s lawns and developing neighborhoods)

Each individual impacts the overall world balance. Every individual choice tips the balance in favor of Earth health or Earth destruction. This includes diet, transportation, use of resources, recycling, and so on. A big factor on this list also is one`s yard.

The "lawn" as we know it is unsustainable and harmful

An expanse of lawn can be lovely. However, its maintenance encourages pollutive practices:
* weekly mowing
* periodic chemical application of pesticides or fertilizers
* regular watering
* removal of trees or shrubs that may hinder ability to mow

Also, the lawn has long-term effects that encourage climate change and global warming. The lawn:
* dries out the topsoil layers, which also dries out the grass
* does not hold in water or coolness well
* space taken by grass prevents trees, shrubs, flowers, fruits and vegetables that would hold in moisture, re-mineralize the soil, and support birds, bees, and other life
* prevents sufficient biological diversity because there is no habitat for life to live in
* kills biological diversity because chemicals are designed to kill, and they do not know when to stop killing.

The overall effect of this is the transformation of Earth from a lush, diverse, abundant ground cover that protects and sustains us into a dried-out, burned-out, chemically-maintained, wildlife-killing wasteland. This look is currently seen as desirable and "beautiful." This "lawn" concept is promoting a hot, burned-out, poisoned world that lacks biological diversity.

Lawn is only one concept of beauty; there are many others that are lovelier and more sustainable.

There are incredible, beautiful alternatives to the modern "lawn."

One possibility is to fill one`s yard with trees, shrubs, flowers, plants, and trees. Choose local and native species that thrive in the conditions of the area. This will limit the need for maintenance or watering. Chemicals are unnecessary if plants are chosen well. A diverse yard like this will encourage many more birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects and animals.

Another option in addition is to grow food-bearing trees, shrubs, and plants in your yard. Combine flower beds with fruit trees and vegetable beds. Blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry bushes grow well in quite a few regions. Also in every region certain nut trees and fruit trees will grow well. Grape vines look lovely draped around a terraced porch. Many plants can even be grown in decorative pots. Pepper plants, for example, grow very well and produce many peppers. They look very lovely even inside your home.

A third way to help the Earth is to put bird houses and bathhouses among the trees. Feed birds organic birdseed. Grow sunflowers, which are lovely and produce many sunflower seeds for oneself and the birds.

Also buy eggs from a local farmer who raises them in a healthy and humane fashion. This choice ensures that one does not support animal torture or encourage development of new strains of bird flus, whose source have been linked in the past to inhumane mass farming practices.

Buy honey from local beekeepers. The bees suffer en masse from colony collapse disorder, which has been linked to both a mite and also the use of pesticides. All honeybees may soon go extinct if we do not protect them. Build a bee box and raise bees at home.

Collect food remains, mix them with soil and leaves and paper, let them decay, and spread these around the yard.

Other simple, helpful choices can include:
* plant trees every week
* plant every avocado, citrus, fruit, or nut seed from eaten foods
* give living gifts (plants and trees)
* become a guerrilla gardener (randomly plant flowers and trees in places, to help Earth and spread beauty).

What are the advantages of filling one`s yard with trees, plants, shrubs, bird houses, bathhouses, and bee boxes?

Some of many advantages include:
* Beauty
* Create protective habitat to protect dwindling bird, butterfly, bee, insect populations
* Promote wildlife diversity and survival
* Trees and plants hold in the moisture
* Trees and plants cool down the land
* Watering will be less needed
* Chemical applications will be unneeded
* Fertilizers will be unneeded
* Trees help soil to retain rain water as ground water, allowing it to linger longer in the soil for plants
* Cooling and moisturizing one`s own yard helps to counteract the devastating heating and drying of the Earth that is happening as we remove its groundcovers

Pesticides and herbicides are familiar but are not necessary

Do not trust chemicals. They were not used throughout history until the 20th century. They have an occasional beneficial need but for the most part they are simply unnecessary. Beyond this, they are very harmful. The famous bumper sticker says, "Pesticides are designed to kill, and they do not know when to stop killing."

Eat, farm, garden, and live organically.

One final choice that will greatly benefit Earth and one`s own health is the non-negotiable adoption of a natural, chemical-free lifestyle. Chemicals, again, are simply unnecessary. Nature provides everything that humans and animals need for health and well-being. Education and healthy choices are the keys.

Final thought

As our nation develops, our country is being covered by homes as well as shopping centers, business districts, and road systems. The world once was totally covered with trees, wild ground covers, and endless diverse forms of wildlife. People are removing nearly all of it through "development." The world humans are creating is the world that we see in all of our yards. At this moment, this means: very little diversity, nutrient-poor soil, no insects, virtually no habitat for birds or other animals, and an abundance of pesticide, herbicide, and chemical fertilizer. This does not provide us with oxygen, food, moist soils, moisture in the air, coolness from trees, biological diversity, health, or as much beauty. It leaves our Earth much hotter, drier, and exposed to potential further harm. There is very little room for sustainability, thriving of life on Earth, or a healthy future in what Americans currently prefer as "the perfect lawn."

The choice to transform the lawn into a vibrant, diverse, food-bearing, life-supporting garden is a choice that adds beauty, helps Earth, and helps each family. These choices honor the diversity, strength, and healing nature of Earth. -naturalnews

How To Make Water From Air

Global warming brings many water problems. One way around them is to use desalination. Another is to obtain water from air! Several products are in development or are on the market already. You watch - this trend will become a tsunami.

Global warming causes water shortages through droughts and disappearing glaciers. It also causes polluted water sources when there are floods, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Indeed several reports on the impacts of global warming suggest the possibility of wars between nations over water.

So there is a great and growing need to alleviate water shortages and for clean drinking water.

There are several approaches to harvesting humidity in the air around us. Of course the first is to minimise the effects of global warming through going to the causes. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and to "reduce, re-use and recycle" are primary strategies.

Next, there are various technologies that can help. These include

*Desalination through distillation

*Condensation

*Water absorption by salt

Desalination is now widely used but water from air technology is the next trend.

Condensation

Dr Max Whisson has been called the Water And Wind Wizard of Oz. He has patented the "Whisson Windmill", or "Water Harvester", as he prefers to call it. It harvests water from air.

How?

Well, Dr Whisson was inspired by a little African beetle which collects the early morning's condensed water from its own body. From that observation he developed his windmill that produces water from air.

As Dr Whisson has put it: "The amount of water available in the air is for all forseeable practical purposes unlimited. The bottom 1 kilometre (in the atmosphere) alone contains about 1.000,000,000,000,000 litres of water and that is turned over every few hours. The "Whisson Windmill" or Max Water From Air device will make it possible to get adequate water anywhere at any time, drought or no drought."

The water you see collecting on the ground under your car's airconditioner is an example of the same condensation process that Whisson uses.

The Whisson windmill is essentially a wind turbine which is connected to a refrigeration compressor. A refrigerant cools the blades of the wind turbine, after which it is returned to a compressor. The "free" energy from wind drives the cooled blades of the turbine and water is then condensed from the ambient air. This water is then collected.

This remarkable invention is under development with the University of Western Australia.

Similar to Whisson's Windmill water from air principle the Air Water Pty Ltd's Air Water Machines also harvest water from air by using a condensation method. Its units are on the market now, with capacities ranging from 28 litres (7 gallons) per day to 5000 litres per day (1321 gallons).

Water absorption by salt

This approach harvests water from air by forcing air through a liquid lithium chloride salt solution. This compound attracts water from the air, after which it is extracted and filtered through table salt which acts as a natural disinfectant. The final step is to filter this water through a carbon filter, adding taste.

These units can make up to 1200 gallons of drinking water per day and have been purchased by The US FESA for emergency relief purposes.

Water from air The Holy Grail?

So you see there are some pretty interesting developments under way that promise clean water. But are these alone the answer to a sustainable future?

We cannot use technology to refreeze disappearing glaciers or the ice caps, refill rivers, remake their entire ecology or stop rising oceans due to global warming.

More than technology is needed for that useful as it is. A truly sustainable future will involve love of our home, the Earth, and for each other. Simple as that. -Erik Leipoldt

Steps That You Need To Do Before Starting To Recycle Styrofoam

Many business owners have to face the difficulty or the challenge to recycle styrofoam. Not all attempts to re-use this material are successful, particularly when it takes great efforts to get rid of large amounts of left overs. Styrofoam is very cheap to produce, so it should not take too complex procedures to dispose of it. One of the first methods to recycle styrofoam was that of melting and using it for the extraction of the raw material without ever needing any form of toxic solvents. Before you think about how to recycle styrofoam, we should definitely find some solutions for reusing it.

Also known as polystyrene, styrofoam has one of the most varied usages in the package industrial sector: it is light, easy and cheap to manufacture, not to mention that it creates excellent protection environments for fragile merchandise. Knowing how many things are actually made of polystyrene should definitely increase the desire to recycle styrofoam. Coffee cups and salad boxes, plates, containers, meat trays, egg and milk cartons and a lot more, are just some of the polystyrene packages that we use on a daily basis. However, in order to be able to recycle styrofoam from such items, they need to be cleaned and gathered in massive amounts.

Think of the loose styrofoam peanuts used for the packaging of various items; such light-weight materials are great for the transportation of special electric and delicate equipment: computers, TV sets or other items. Styrofoam peanuts can be taken to local businesses that reuse it for the packaging or storing of their products. Do not attempt to take the packages you have at home to recycling plants since it is prohibited to receive recycle stryrofoam in quantities other than industrial. So, don't get discouraged by the lack of options you may be facing; there could be ways of actually re-using the items ingeniously.

Before you attempt to recycle styrofoam, there are a few steps you need to do, as this material has to meet several quality features in order to be properly re-processed. Thus, there should be no traces of plastic, glue or cardboard on the polystyrene packages. If you ship a container, you need to think of how to make more styrofoam occupy less space; one solution would be that of cutting the foam into small pieces and then store it for shipping. As for identification, the recycle styrofoam number is six, a resin identification code that you'll find on many foam plastic packages. -Muna wa Wanjiru

Considering Some Ways To Recycle Wool Sweaters

Clothing items are probably the easiest to reuse since they can have a wide range of applicability besides the function for which they were designed in the first place. Consider for instance some ways to recycle wool sweaters! This may look like a challenge but it could be both fun and totally rewarding if you show some good will and imagination. Thus, when you recycle wool sweaters you can actually make some excellent mittens for instance: the sleeve areas are the ones to be used best for the matter. Cut the shape of the mittens into the sleeve, then sew them together, and you've got a nice and clean way of re-using some items that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Another way of recycling wool sweaters is by turning them into different apparel items by simple redesign techniques. You can take the sleeves away, and play other tricks with the seams. There are cases when you should have a look at the many clothes re-use tricks that you can find on the Internet. Sometimes, step by step indications are available to allow one make the best of the clothing item by merely transforming it into a totally different model.

The need to recycle wool sweaters is a lot larger given the fact that every year we lose some more items to insects, despite special storage measures that most of us take. If you can no longer turn your wool sweaters into some other clothing item, you can very well re-use them for interior decorations. A great way to recycle wool sweaters is to use the larger parts in order to make throw pillow covers; they are both soft and easy to clean, not to mention that the aesthetic effect is easily achieved. One large wool sweater should be enough to make a good pillow case.

When you recycle wool sweaters, felting them is very often the biggest challenge. The whole point is to be able to get the sweaters in such a way so they don't start to unravel the moment you cut them. Many home designers choose to make the wool fabric a lot denser by washing the wool sweaters in hot water; the material that results afterwards is a lot easier to work with. Therefore, once you get to try it, you'll realize that the process to recycle wool sweaters is neither hard nor impossible to achieve. Good luck! -Muna wa Wanjiru

Why Buy Organic and Fairtrade Cotton Clothes?

It is also very comfortable and durable. All these uses make it one of the most popular and widely traded commodities on earth.
Cotton is a globally important fibre, providing returns to many small farmers in developing countries. Fairtrade cotton has just been released in the UK providing job security and greater incomes to farmers. But the downfall is that most cotton is produced in a way that causes great damage to the environment as is it is one of the most chemical intensive crops in the world. High productivity comes at great environmental and health costs.
So serious are the negative impacts of chemical-intensive agricultural production, that momentum for change has grown considerably in recent years. The trend toward more environmentally friendly production methods is mainly due to enlightened companies under pressure of increased environmental regulation and competition, and informed consumers calling for greater social and environmental accountability.

In many African countries with lax environmental controls, farmers can apply nearly one-third of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides for every pound of cotton harvested. Some of these chemicals are classified as the most toxic around and the negative impacts can be severe. The simple act of growing and harvesting the amount of cotton fibre needed to make a T-shirt takes an enormous toll on the earths air, water, and soil, and has significant impacts on the health of people in cotton growing areas. These carcinogenic chemicals can leave residues on the skin, and it is now argued that these are associated with allergies. Organic cotton is therefore kinder to the skin. For more information visit the Pesticide Action Network site at http://www.pan-uk.org/

Organic cotton begins with living soil. This means the soil has not had any chemicals used in it for at least three years and it has been enriched with compost and other organic matter. These replace synthetic fertilizers that are harmful to the health.
Organic cotton production has increased 5-fold in the past 4 years. The UK is among the worlds fastest growing markets. Each year, thanks to organic cotton, more cotton farmers around the world are able to minimise their effect on their health from pesticide exposure.
There are also signs that organic cotton is moving out of its niche market into the mainstream with increased interest on the part of supermarkets and large companies. Marks and Spencers and the Top Shop have recently launched organic and fairtrade clothing ranges to meet the growing market that started with organic food and then moving into non food areas such as cotton and paints.

For those of you that are parents, Clean Slate Clothing has introduced accountability to the clothes which children wear everyday by selling the worlds first Fairtrade and Organic School Uniforms.

Ethical companies also need to move beyond selling organic cotton clothes to ensuring that they are using environmentally friendly dyes and recycled materials with the minimum of packaging and literature. -Davinos Greeno

Why Its Much More Cheaper To Recycle Than To Produce New Raw Materials

To recycle means to save virgin raw materials and to re-process already used products; recycling has presently become almost a stand point one takes towards the environmental problems on our planet. All recycle ideas are common things throughout our modern history. Even before, in ancient times, metallic scraps were recovered for melting; then, when awareness increased that to recycle paper means to save forests, Britain founded the first waste paper association in the modern history of the world.

Recycle ideas were more appreciated after the two world wars. In World War II all countries involved in the conflagration collected metals from their citizens, and in Japan, for instance, the effort of recycling materials continued even after hostilities ended. In time as the energy cost was increased in 1970s, companies were forced to invest more in recycling programs.

If a company recycles aluminum it uses only five per cent of the total amount of energy required to make a virgin production. Recycling plastics saves over 70% energy as compared to the manufacturing process, while recycled paper requires 40% less energy. Raw materials recovered from collecting companies are purer, transport is much cheaper, since for example bauxite or aluminum must be brought from Brazil.

So the environmental, social and most of the economic costs are reduced drastically by recycle techniques. If in the past recycle companies accepted only certain materials such plastic or metallic scraps, over the last years a wider range of products have started to be accepted for recycling.

In normal conditions, it's much more cheaper to recycle than to produce new raw materials. The fact is that all recycle techniques use energy for processing, transport, not to mention the water quantity necessary to cool down the machines. Recycling has different costs depending on the collecting methods; thus, collective recycling costs about $60 per ton, while separate collecting is more that $150 per ton.

Elements like mercury are very hard to manage, so the European Union banned the export of mercury in an effort to avoid accidents. And even if there are voices that claim, mercury recycling is much more difficult and expensive, the ecologists' arguments remain valid: we should support the idea of recycling even when it isn't “profitable”!

Batteries make another special case as they contain toxic heavy metals so they are both profitable for collecting companies and also protect natural environment; yet size and battery type variations make the recycle effort more difficult. Older batteries contained mercury and cadmium, toxic substances that required safe manipulation, whereas car batteries contain acid and are easier to recycle or even to recharge.

Another ecological problem is to dispose of old electrical equipment such as mobile phones and computers. The recycling process is hindered since all components must be separated on categories. Dismantling can also bring serious profits to collecting and recycle companies as most electronics contain small amounts of copper and gold, hence, we've got another good reason to reuse waste products. -Muna wa Wanjiru

Summer Vacationing with Reduced Carbon Emissions

With the arrival of warmer months comes the desire to travel and see new places. However, traveling can be one of the human activities that contributes to global warming the most. The following article will guide you in making informed choices about your travel plans, allowing you to find a pleasurable escape while reducing your carbon footprint.

Stop Global Warming Travel Tip #1: Seek Out Ecotourism Opportunities

According to The International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." This concept is based on the intersection of conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. By seeking out ecotourism options, you can reduce your impact, preserving the special qualities of the places to which you were drawn in the first place.

When planning your trip, look for lodging that has a responsible environmental policy. Unfortunately, there is no uniform certification standard from which to judge and "greenwashing" can be a problem, but there are some ways you can decipher industry leaders from wannabes. First, you can start by searching the web for hotels that advertise responsible environmental practices, then either follow up with a phone call or check with a knowledgeable travel agency. Look for some kind of third-party awarded certification. Some of the more well-known certifications are: Energy Star (with a rating of at least 75/100), LEED certified building design, EU Eco-label, Green Globe (Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and expanding to the Caribbean), Green Leaf (Canada), and Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas (a joint effort of the Rainforest Alliance and The International Ecotourism Society). Some establishments may have earned recognition for some of their eco-groovy practices.

Stop Global Warming Travel Tip#2: Get There Responsibly

As the journey to your destination will probably be the most emission-intense portion of your vacation, there are several alternatives for lowering your impact. Flying is by far the most polluting option. Especially if you are traveling in a group, it is far more cost effective (both in dollars and emissions) to go by car. If you travel by car, be sure that your tires are properly inflated to ensure a smoother ride with fewer emissions and less gas waste-you'll be saving money as you save fuel!

Train travel, while often overlooked, is the best option when it comes to making the journey, if you can afford the time. The many benefits of train travel include: social interaction with other passengers and not having to constantly seek out eating establishments, deal with gridlock or hold any concerns about your vehicle.

Whatever transportation method you use, you may choose to offset your carbon emissions by purchasing a carbon neutralization package. This is a great way to actively stop global warming and support companies that are working towards curbing emissions. They will neutralize your carbon emissions by supporting a variety of projects that will offset the amount of carbon your travel produces. Here is one example to check out: www.terrapass.com

Stop Global Warming Travel Tip #3: Lower Your Tourist Impact

Once you arrive at your destination, no matter where you go, there are a number of ways you can reduce your negative tourist impact and your carbon contributions while maximizing your positive influence.

Should your travels find you in an urban setting, try depending on public transportation instead of a rented car or taxis. This will give you a taste of the true flavor of the city while saving you the hassle of navigating traffic and finding parking on foreign streets, not to mention the substantial monetary savings. Many public transit systems even offer weeklong and weekend packages for unlimited travel, a true bargain for the mobile tourist.

Save money on dining by locating the local farmer's market. Besides providing a more authentic local experience, it can help answer such questions as: what grows here in July? Why is this town famous for its specialty cheese or its rhubarb pie? By supporting the farmer's markets, you will get to experience fresh, delicious foods that are specific to the given region. Furthermore, purchasing locally-grown food helps reduce your so-called "food miles", or the distance your food has traveled, a major contributor to greenhouse gases.

In the spirit of adventure, try patronizing some of the local establishments for your eating, drinking and recreational pleasure! Remember to be mindful of delicate ecosystems should your travel take you to a wilderness area. Traveling to forests, beaches, etc. is a privilege and should be treated as such to ensure that you and others can return for a special experience in the years to come. When venturing into the great outdoors, remember to pack out what you brought in, making sure to leave all places in the same condition you found them. Consider non-motorized forms of recreation such as hiking, biking, swimming, sailing or horseback riding - not only will the serenity be refreshing to your ears, but they result in fewer greenhouse gases. Remember, if it has a motor, there is a good chance it is spewing emissions into the atmosphere! -Nathan Brown

Reforestation Trust

Reforestation trust is the trust that will protect reforested land from being subjected to cutting of trees again for a long time. Creation of this trust means the land does not belong to any particular individual and therefore, it need to be subjected to frequent cutting of trees and erosion of soil.

Reforestation trust is created by organizations who work actively for reforestation. Such organization take up places around the world, where trees have been cut off, such chunks are then adopted by these organizations. These organizations will then start the process of reforestation which will then make the area green again.

Reforestation will almost reverse the effect of deforestation. Soil erosion, pollution, global warming are some of the problems that can be solved by reforestation. Therefore, these organizations have ensured that the hard work done by them is not wasted by those who will again cut trees.

Reforestation trust has been created for the above purpose of protection. Whenever you donate money for reforestation, you will not need to worry whether or not your money has been utilized for the purpose you wanted it to work. These trusts have increased the trust quotient in people’s minds regarding these organizations. People are donating money for this purpose has increased because of increase in trust.

Reforestation trust also has another job to do. They increase consciousness among people regarding global warming, soil erosion, change of weather, increasing water and sea level, etc. Educating general public about these effects has increased awareness, this brings in donations. Those people who do not donate, subconsciously try and avoid using products which could increase pollution.

Almost every organization has its own reforestation trust. This trust will remain even if members come and go. This trust also helps the organization function in a methodical and legal matters. Creation of a trust is a necessity since these trusts operate not in a single country rather they work internationally.

The trust has to ensure that their work is being done legally; otherwise it could lead to banning of the organization. You can approach this trust to know how your money has been spend by this organization. You can in fact even donate to this trust.

Reforestation trust is necessary when it comes to proper functioning and protection of reforested land and its re-established flora and fauna. Global warming is a problem faced very directly by some countries, whereas others are feeling the difference in climatic conditions.

Floods have dogged us in last two years. There have been more than one hurricane that had the capacity to destroy homes in a large area. These are aftermaths of global warming and erosion, just the things that the reforestation aims to curb and avoid. You can log online and check out websites that deal with environmental issues. The reforestation trust deals with putting back forests and also by trying to ensure that they can cover many previously forested areas worldwide and turn them again into the green forests they were before. -Hamish Fraser

How to Prevent Deforestation

Everyone in the world would do well to know how to prevent deforestation. The profound effects of deforestation on the world are getting increasingly worse. More and more natural disasters are occurring every year, in all parts of the world. The tsunami in Phuket, the disastrous, devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, and dozens of other disasters have left the communities they touch in ruins. Not so long ago, it seemed like we only needed to worry about deforestation in the rain forest. Now, however, it is occurring in every imaginable location. Trees and vegetation are being destroyed to make room for housing and businesses. The far reaching implications of this occurrence are almost too horrible to even consider but we must, for the sake of our environment.

Every person can do his or her part to prevent deforestation. Doing so is surprisingly simple. Every individual gesture helps; the gesture may seem small right now, but each one is like a ripple in a pond, which grows larger and larger. In order to neutralise a negative event, one must counter it with a positive one. To counteract the removal of trees, simply plant some more. Doing this in the yard of one's own home can have a hugely positive effect. It also makes life healthier. After all, every tree, big or small, gives off oxygen. Trees also contain water, which guards and protects against soil erosion.

Naturally, recycling does wonders too. Quite a lot of things most people use in their day to day lives can be recycled. This includes books, paper products, shopping bags, bottles, and cans, just to name a few. This prevents the need for raw material to make new products. With paper products, this is especially important, as trees are, of course, used to make paper. Once, recycled paper seemed like a novelty. Now it is a necessity, and even some companies and businesses are using recycled products.

Those who farm the land should consider crop rotation. These means planting new crops in the plot of land from which other crops have recently been harvested. That way, new plots of land need not be used. Crop rotation actually makes for more fertile soil as well.

Sometimes, trees do have to be cut down. However, only mature trees should be cut. Saplings should be left to grow and thrive. It is also an excellent practice to make up for every tree cut down by planting a new tree.

Whenever possible, firewood should not be used to heat the house. Rather, coals are a much more environmentally safe alternative. Firewood is consumed in just a few hours. However, the tree which produced that wood took years to grow to maturity. Conversely, coals can burn for quite a while. They will not only keep the house warmer, they will also be safer for the environment and monumental in preventing deforestation.

Trees have long been a valuable resource. They provide food, oxygen, shade, and beauty. However, although with more and more animals and natural resources every year, they are in danger of disappearing altogether. -Hamish Fraser

How Biofuels Have Helped Us

As the name implies, biofuels are fuels derived from organic material. Since they can be made in many ways, they are classified as 1st generation, 2nd generation, and 3rd generation.

First generation bio-fuels are the more common fuels that are produced from food crops and animal fats. Some examples include bio-diesel, vegetable oil, and bio-gas.

Second generation bio-fuels are made from waste biomass, making them a more sustainable solution as compared to their 1st gen counterparts. They include various alcohols (such as ethanol) and diesel derived from wood and even human excrement.

Third generation bio-fuels are generally made from algae that are farmed on a massive scale. By way of photosynthesis and the breaking down of carbon dioxide, the carbohydrates extracted from these micro-organisms is used to make various fuels.

So what separates bio-fuels from fossil fuels?

Bio-fuels differ from fossil fuels in the following ways:
  1. Where bio-fuels can be made very quickly, fossil fuels take millions of years to be made.
  2. The pollution from fossil fuels is far more severe. Although burning bio-fuels also creates emissions, the carbon dioxide is more environmentally friendly and absorbed easily by crops and organisms.
  3. Fossil fuels are non-renewable, whereas bio-fuels tend be more renewable. As long as there is human excrement, there will be bio-fuels. Furthermore, with the help of crop rotation, there can be an endless supply of bio-fuels.
This leads us on to the advantages of bio-fuels:
  • As more people use bio-fuels, it lowers the demand on pollution creating fossil-fuels.
  • This helps reduce harmful carbon emissions, making bio-fuels more friendly for the environment.
  • And since they can be made from almost any organic substance, bio-fuels are a cheap alternative for consumers.
Bio-fuels sound too good to be true. There must be some disadvantages to producing and using them. So, are there any?

Like any new technology, of course there are disadvantages

Although they are environmentally friendly, bio-fuels have been ironically criticized by the environmental community, for the reasons given below:
  • It has long been debated on the usefulness on first generation bio-fuels as compared to the shortage of food they could cause. Producing bio-fuels from crops make the food worthless for us to eat. And some people believe that we should rather use those crops to cure world hunger than to power our vehicles and homes.
  • The large farmlands necessary to produce first and third generation bio-fuels can result in us encroaching on the natural ecology of plants and animals.
So you can see, biofuels are still a contentious issue. However, we believe that with the correct management - such as crop rotation - and improved technology biofuels can be a sustainable solution that will do more good than harm. But only time will tell. -DIY Renewable Energy

Petroleum vs. Biofuels

Natural fuels are a hot topic, but the drawback is that they aren't competitive, price-wise. They still need taxpayer support to match oil prices.

Why do we think that oil, gas and coal don't cost our nation in countless indirect ways?

A tremendous amount of time and human energy in the Beltway are focused on insuring that fossil fuels continue to be available to our citizens. Is that not a cost?

The Secretary of State and his/her Department spend an enormous amount of their resources trying to keep the flow of oil continuing to the US. That's not free.

Have we partnered with thugs to get oil? Have we rebuffed honest governments? Those choices tax us in many indirect ways.

And then there's the Biggie: the Army, the Navy, the Marines. Can anyone put a price tag on their deployment around the globe, so that they may protect our oil supplies?

Look at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Regardless of how you feel about the wars, consider this: without our dependence on oil, would we be involved in that region?

For that matter, would there be a War on Terror, if not for our oil needs? Would radicals in so much of the Islamic world focus their destructive efforts towards America?

I'm not supporting terrorism. This is just an observation. Our ties to fossil fuels have hidden costs we need to start recognizing.

And I'm not blaming big oil, either. Without our oil companies, the USA never gets to where we are today.

This is about recognizing changing realities. We can only buy oil from a few countries. We can get biofuel feedstocks from every country in the world.

And if we can decrease our dependence on oil, our nation can devote more of expenditures, our attention, and our international efforts toward goals that will serve us in the future, as well as today.

So maybe, just maybe, plant and animal fuels are more affordable than fossil fuels, even before the recent rise in prices at the pump. -Josh Skandar

Recycle lampshade if you want to keep your home full of memories

Many people are nostalgic about old things and lamps are such decoration items one finds difficult to part with. You may often hear complaints that nowadays you can't find a decent lamp anymore, they are no longer what they were once. The first argument the elderly bring is low quality, which is true sometimes; low quality means low price and most of the producers would definitely go for a low selling price. Under such circumstances, the recycle lampshade idea appeared; it was born as a solution for elderly people who wanted to keep their old objects so full of memories.

The truth is that materials used for designing lamps don't last a life time, years of exposure to light, heat and dust can lead to something irrecoverable. Recycle lampshade solutions try to change used materials with new ones respecting the initial design and size, and although the cover may be harder to save the metallic framework can usually be reused.

The recycle lampshade process is an extraordinary resource for lamp fabrics, most of these items can be recovered with a minimum effort and be ready for sale with the price of a new one. Antic lamps can be recovered and resold according to the same pattern. The Victorian style models are to be found on the Internet due to the popularity of recycle lampshade techniques.

The perfect place to look for old lamps are garages, estate sales, junk and antique stores, markets or thrift stores. The fact is that not everything you will find in such places can be used, some items need recycle lampshade techniques for recovery. This practice of reconditioning old lamps isn't new, it is practiced from the beginning of the 20th century and it has continued ever since.

Old textile materials are usually full of dust and they are not the perfect light source for your children. Recycle lampshade techniques try to solve this problem because they change the old fabrics and replace the framework beneath if it is wood made. Though reconditioned, you will be actually purchasing a new product for a much lower price.

Even after the recycle lampshade process is over, the new materials are equally exposed to dust and mites, so you'll have to constantly clean them. Though there are many voices against it, the effort to recycle lampshade items is worth making particularly if you think about the happiness of a grandparent who'll find his or her old lamp reconditioned. -Muna wa Wanjiru

Handmade Paper - Do It Yourself

Recycling is the norm of the day. So, if you too want to contribute to the cause of environment and if you are interested in doing some craft yourself then here is the simple method of making handmade paper. Do it yourself and see how good it feels to use a paper made with your own hands!
Selection of Raw Material Papers
The basic material required for the project is paper that can be any thing- unprinted computer paper, magazines, egg cartons, toilet paper, paper bags, office paper, typing paper, napkins, construction paper etc. Just remember that old cards will make heavier paper while tissue paper will make finer paper. If using non waxed boxes then pre-soak them in warm water. Avoid newspapers as the chemicals and ink in them lead to a handmade paper which is a muddy -looking sheet of poor quality. If possible, combine a recycled base with equal amounts of abaca or cotton pulp. Buy it in semi-processed form so that it can be used in a household blender.

Tools Required for Making Handmade Paper

1. A blender

2. A laundry tub

3. Handmade paper mold and deckle

4. Torn pieces of recycled paper or cotton pulp

5. Fabric square (felt or flannel square)

6. Sponge

7. Newspaper or absorbent towels for a couching pad

Steps for Making Paper

* Tear the selected paper into small bits and put them into blender with warm water. Make it about half full. Run the blender, increasing its speed slowly, for about 30 -40 seconds until the pulp becomes smooth.

* Make a mold by stretching fiberglass screen (plain old door and window screen) over a wooden frame and stapling it. Make it as tight as possible.

* Fill the tub about half way with water. Add loads of pulp and stir the mixture. The more pulp you add the thicker the paper will be.

* Place the mold into the pulp and level it out keeping it submerged. Gently shake it side-to-side until the pulp on top of the screen appears to be even.

* Now lift the mold up slowly until it is above the level of water. Wait until most of the water has drained. Add or remove pulp to obtain the desired thickness of the paper. If so, you'll have to stir the mixture again.

* After draining the water, slowly place one edge on the side of a fabric square and gently ease the mold down flat, with the paper directly on the fabric. With the sponge, press out as much water as possible.

* Hold the fabric square flat and gently lift the edge of the mold in a manner that the wet sheet of paper stays back on the fabric.

* Make more wet papers by repeating the steps above. Stack the fabric squares on a cookie sheet and place one fabric square on the top of the stack in order to cover the last piece of paper. With another cookie sheet, press out any remaining water.

* Now gently separate the sheets and dry them either by hanging on a clothesline or laying out on sheets of newspapers.

And here's your own handmade paper ready! -Jeff Hardy
